The continuation of the partnership between the Ulm University Hospital Department of Neurosurgery and the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi, aims to establish a structured neurosurgical training programme at the hospital and improve the quality of neurosurgical treatment in Malawi.

Background:
Neurosurgery makes a significant contribution to emergency care, especially in cases of serious injuries or strokes. However, with just three neurosurgeons in Malawi, there is a large section of the population that fails to receive adequate care. Although the country does have sufficient logistical and infrastructure conditions to be able to perform neurosurgical operations, the required training and educational structures are lacking.

Activities:
- Providing training on the neurointensive ward and in neuroanesthesiology in Malawi and Germany
through practical courses and seminars
- Holding exchange visits to Malawi and Germany
- Introducing a system for reporting critical incidents in the partner hospital in order to improve patient
safety

Impact:
The project aims to strengthen neurosurgical health care and thus improve the quality of neurosurgical treatment.
