The partnership between the Medical Education and Training for Africa e.V. (met4a e.V.) and the Women’s Clinic of Mnazi Mmoja Hospital in Zanzibar aims to reduce maternal and child mortality as well as support the education and training of medical personnel.
Problem: Currently, there is no structured midwifery training program nor specialization opportunity in maternal or child health in Zanzibar. Many young doctors often must receive their specializations in other countries and do not return to Zanzibar. Due to lacking neonatal care and expertise, the maternal and newborn mortality remains high.
Main Activities: Within the project midwives, nurses, and junior doctors participate in theoretical and practical trainings. The education of midwives on ultrasound techniques will also be used to evaluate and assess risks during maternal ward intake.
Short-Term Effects: Through targeted training opportunities for medical personnel, neonatal treatment will be improved and expertise in this field will be expanded.
Long-Term Effects: During improved education opportunities, the incentive for doctors to stay in Zanzibar will be improved and thus, care and expertise will reduce maternal and child mortality rates.
