The objective of the hospital partnership project between Carl-Thiem-Klinikum Cottbus gGmbH and the Nepal Cleft and Burn Center at the Kirtipur Hospital is to provide continuing professional development for staff at the hospital in Kathmandu. A particular focus of this training is plastic and reconstructive surgery for patients with tumours and deformities.

Background:
The Kirtipur Hospital in the Nepalese capital city of Kathmandu guarantees the care of people nationwide. As the country’s national health strategy makes provisions for the financial independence of the health care structure without teams of foreign doctors, the project supports the training of surgeons in Nepal who will serve as multipliers for trainee doctors throughout the country.

Activities:
- Preparing lectures
- Creating training materials
- Visits by German partners to Nepal and providing training in the area of patient care

Impact:
The partnership project promotes in particular the care of disadvantaged patients with disabilities, deformities and disfigurements who receive improved treatment as a result of the training provided for medical staff. The project also aims to ensure that Nepalese surgeons will be trained in this specialist area in Nepal itself in future in an effort to improve the country’s care structure in the long term.
