The cooperation arrangement between ADRA Deutschland e.V., Krankenhaus Walfriede in Berlin and ADRA Kenya, Kisii Gynocare and Gynocare Women’s and Fistula Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya aims to improve the opportunities to treat obstetric fistula in Kenya. Capacities in the partner hospitals are to be improved.
Problem: In Kenya many women develop fistula as a result of childbirth-related injuries. The risks are increased by early pregnancies, female genital mutilation and the lack of medical care before and during childbirth. Affected women suffer severe incontinence and are often ostracised in their communities. Obstetric fistula can be surgically corrected, but there is a lack of hospitals with specialised staff and the necessary equipment.
Main activities: Reciprocal visits of German and Kenyan partners allow doctors to learn to perform the procedure on affected women. The Kenyan hospitals are also to be fitted out with new medical equipment. Medical staff is to attend training on prevention, follow-up treatment and the social reintegration of affected women.
Short-term results: The treatment and prevention of obstetric fistula are to be improved in partner hospitals.
Long-term results: Access to surgical correction of obstetric fistula in Kenya is to be enhanced for all sections of society. Women affected by obstetric fistula will be able to participate again in the life of society.
