There is a project partnership in place between SAIDA International e.V. and three Burkinese project partners: the Direction Re´gionale de la Sante´ du Centre-Est, the AWA association and the non-governmental organisation Voix de Femmes. The purpose of this collaboration is to offer reconstructive clitoral and labial surgery for women in Burkina Faso.

Background:
Around 90% of girls in the Centre-Est region of Burkina Faso are affected by female genital mutilation, resulting in psychological trauma, damage to the urinary diversion systems and vaginal canal, and fistula formation. This mutilation also robs women and girls of their sexual sensation. To date, there is no expert surgical treatment available for the consequences of female genital mutilation outside the capital city of Ouagadougou.

Activities:
- Providing training in reconstructive surgery and follow-up treatment in Germany and Burkina Faso
- Holding information events on women’s rights and sexual and reproductive health in order to identify affected women
- Providing training for midwives and obstetricians from all over the Centre-Est region

Impact:
The project is enabling women to regain their sexual sensation and improve their reproductive health, as well as strengthening women’s right to sexual equality.
