The Nigerian-German project between University Medicine Greifswald and Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital works to improve the safety of blood donations and blood transfusions in Kano, Nigeria. To this end, an app is to be used to recruit donors and the Nigerian hospital is to be established as a referral centre for transfusion services.

Background:
In Nigeria’s health care system, blood transfusion is an important means of support in the treatment of patients during childbirth and for sickle cell disease, etc. To guarantee the safety of blood transfusions, establishing a quality management system for the transfusion chain and the availability of donors is a key factor. A system for this purpose had already been established in the previous hospital partnership and is now to be expanded.

Activities:
- Provision of infrastructure and internet services
- Analysis of the donor database: recording of the number of family and voluntary donors
- Conducting of training courses for quality assurance in blood banks
- Setting up of a channel of communication for the 10 hospitals in Kano and a communication platform
for donors

Impact:
Setting up communication channels and the platform mobilises voluntary donors and facilitates access to potential blood donations between the participating hospitals.
